Times have changed like you wouldn't believe. I remember when I was young I would walk to school, which was about one mile away, I would play outside and be so far away from my house with out my mom knowing where I was, I would sleep outside on my tramp with my girlfriends, and etc.
Being a mom now I would never let my child do any of those things. Walking to school one mile from our house is only asking for trouble in many ways. Many child abduction cases have happened in areas close enough to my home to make me nervous for my little girl. For her to walk with a few of her friends to school in the morning I think would leave me going crazy wondering if she made it or not.
All a kid wants to do is play and explore new things and ideas. I let A.j., my daughter, go outside and play all the time don't get me wrong, but when I say its time to come in, she throws a fit, every time. The only place I would let her play with out an adult next to her side the entire time would be in our back yard, which just so you know is completely closed in with a brick fence and trees lining the perimeter and two dogs who bark at the drop of a leaf. However I can't go five minutes with out looking out the window or what not to make sure she is safe and still there. Now when I was young we would go on walks all around the neighborhood and go in the fields by our house. As long as we were back in time for dinner, we were free to roam. Ha yeah right, to bad the world is such a non trustworthy place to live now. My kids will not be going miles away from me with the idea of, " just as long as they're home for dinner".
