My view on general education

My mother has completed college and my father has not. However my father started and still owns a highly successful business. My mom has her BA in nursing and her MA in nurse practioner. Being raised in a home like this I was able to see both view points of this issue. I don't feel that a college education is necessary for everyone. But for the majority of people it is. For me, it was just the fact of deciding what I wanted to go into that slowed me down. I went from being a business management major to hospitality management to accounting and now to dental hygiene. I wasted a lot of time and money taking classes that wouldn't apply to my final major. But I still learned a lot and I know that increased my overall intelligence.

At my current job, there are a lot of people that have bachelor's degree in business. Yet they are in the same position as me, making the same amount or less. I think that is what really drove me to the health/dental field. It is a specialized training for a specific job, dental hygienist. I have also met a few people who have one or two college degree's but you would never know it. Of course a degree looks good on paper but if you cannot really apply what you learned your employer will eventually be able to notice. A college shouldn't just be giving out degree's to people that haven't really earned it. They may be book smart but lack common knowledge or street smarts.
