Could you imagine a society without the most convenient form of transportation around today? Think back to the earlier years of life, the people that owned cars also were the more wealthy parts of society, which was very few and far between. Would society be able to survive without what is deemed today’s necessity? Yes, this is a very interesting thing to consider, but just imagine what it would be like. Think to yourself, how would the world be as a whole or how big of an effect this would have? There are many sides to argue on this subject.
In reality, it seems that today’s society has become so dependent on something so lifeless. People seem to have a hard time even functioning if something happens to their car. Cars have become the most major part of our lives, taking over the more necessary or important ones. It seems that this yesterday’s luxury, has caused more problems than any real benefits. Yes, it is nice to be able to go for a random drive somewhere or road trip with your friends and family, or even make a quick run to the grocery store because you forgot the milk. But is it really that nice? Back then, people planned ahead of time. They made grocery lists, had budgets, even planned out home cooked meals in advance. There wasn’t such an issue with obesity or other health concerns that we see today. Family was more of a major focus and there was more togetherness back then, of which, we are lacking today. Heck, our environment might even stand a chance of being in better shape.
Then again, on the positive outlook, cars are a great thing to have to get you anywhere on a dime. Yes, gas may cost near a fortune today, but it’s still something that’s nice to have at your fingertips. Moving is simpler, going to work is less of a headache and running errands can be a blast! You don’t have to worry about bus schedules, standing in the cold waiting for a bus or other form of transportation, but keep in mind, this wasn’t that big of a deal back then. So really, is driving all that it’s cracked up to be? Just think about how much money you spend each month just to drive. First you have to buy the car, then pay to keep it running, pay for the gas so it can run, pay for the insurance, and on top of that, know how to avoid all the other idiots that don’t know how to drive! I have recently befriended a couple, who neither of them have the ability to drive, due to disabilities, but they also don’t let this factor affect their lives. Using public transportation or their own feet, they plan their lives accordingly to their needs or what has to be done.
So is there a right or a wrong side to driving? Yes, there is a positive and a negative side to this issue. I don’t think this argument will ever go one way or the other. I believe there are so many different sides to this story, and those sides all depend on how a person was raised and what they have grown accustom to. On my view of this matter, I think society as a whole needs to become less dependent on something else and more dependent on themselves.
