MY OPINION ON GENERAL EDUCATION
Although I do have mixed feelings on this topic because I did start college right after high school so many of the general courses were and are a review, but for someone that is starting college years after high school general courses may be completely new material for them so they could could be very significant to them. I also feel that having a review of general education can give students more knowledge and further help with their major and related courses so they could be beneficial in some aspect to a students college success.

My view on general education
At my current job, there are a lot of people that have bachelor's degree in business. Yet they are in the same position as me, making the same amount or less. I think that is what really drove me to the health/dental field. It is a specialized training for a specific job, dental hygienist. I have also met a few people who have one or two college degree's but you would never know it. Of course a degree looks good on paper but if you cannot really apply what you learned your employer will eventually be able to notice. A college shouldn't just be giving out degree's to people that haven't really earned it. They may be book smart but lack common knowledge or street smarts.

I really feel that general ed classes are important. For me they are a refresher into some topics and subjects that I have not seen or thought about since high school. I am going to this school for dental hygiene but to be able to write well for work in the field such as resumes, letters to potential employers, I need English to help me be more professional in my writing. Math is also a gen. ed class and I have always loved math so I don't mind it at all. I can usually figure it out pretty quickly. Using math in everyday life can be tricky when forming a budget or trying to figure out if you can buy a new car. However, it is important to know. I understand being frustrated that you are basically re-learning some of this stuff. I go through math and it is kind of repeat most of the time. Although English for me is completely brand new. I have learned so much in these last two English classes than I ever learned in high school.
Generals
Usually I'm a very opinionated person....I feel strongly one way or the other. This one I'm kind of torn though; I feel that some general education classes are very important, while some are not. Anatomy was a very important class for what I will be doing. They say that the mouth is the window to the body and you can tell someone's overall health by what you see in their mouth. Therefore it is very important for me to know how the body works, since I will be working on people's teeth. On the other hand, I think it is a waste of time to take two English classes. I feel it is important that I know how to speak English properly, but neither of the English classes are really even about that. One is about writing essays, and the other is about arguments. I think it would be more beneficial to take something like a Spanish class. It would be a great asset to have in any job to be bilingual. Then there's math.....UGH! I'm going to be scraping teeth, so I don't need to know algebra to do it. I haven't taken an algebra class and in the ten years since high school, I haven't had to use anything like it. Math would be very important in some careers, but not mine. If I had to pick one side or the other, I would say I am more against general education classes. We should spend more time focusing on what we will actually be doing in our careers.

a community of car
I AGREE WITH THE ARTICLE BUT WE ARE LIVING IN A SOCIETY THAT IS GROWING AND EVERYTHING HAPPENS SO FAST SO WE HAVE TO BE FAST. ARE SO MANY THINGS WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF DAILY AND DRIVING FROM ONE POINT TO ANOTHER IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME SAVES A LOT OF ENERGY AND TIME, AND MAKES US ORGANIZED AND EFFICIENT.
A CAR GIVES YOU THE INDEPENDENCY TO DO WHAT YOU WANT AND WHEN YOU WANT WITHOUT BEING STRESSED.
I DON'T AGREE THAT DRIVING LEAD TO OBESITY OR ANY ILLNESSES. WE ARE FREE TO EXERCISE EVERYWHERE AND WE CAN USE CARS TO DRIVE TO A LOT OF PLACES FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. IN MY OPINION DRIVING IT'S NOT THE MAIN CAUSE OF PEOPLE BEING OBESE OR SICK.
I AGREE THAT THE INCREASED AUTO TRAFFIC IS A KEY SOURCE OF POLLUTION BUT EVERYTHING COMES WITH GOOD AND BAD.

General Education
General education gives students a chance to meet other people and develop their interpersonal skills with people other than those that are already in their chosen field of interest. It is nice for those that don't have a major/degree chosen to get a better understanding of the world as whole and what options are available to them. These classes can also give a person a better basis to start their schooling experience.
On the other hand, classes such as College Success and Fitness for Life, and Calligraphy are classes that aren't necessarily related to those degrees in the medical field unless it relates to Physical therapy. These classes are good for students and teaches them a variety of thing, but for it to be mandatory and be at the cost of a "starving" students and even be in the way of recieving their degree as a general credit is pretty ridiculous.

Going over Chap.2 helped me define my claim by defining it as both inductive and deductive. It also helped define my ideology on confirming my beliefs and thoughts on my research topic. I realized being objective is important when listening and when writing in news articles. Being subjective to these articles always shows in their writing in some slight way.
Benefits of having both: Concession
Appeals: -Logic
Deductive
Inductive
Analogic
re: Disconnected by Lynda Smith (overall structure is inductive logic) supporting theories is deductive.
1. Technology is pushed by big companies.
2. Humans have the need to be social.
3. Leads to addiction
4. Companies give us more speed
5. Less time with people
6. Leads to isolation in virtual works.
7. Therefore technology takes into isolation and less connectedness
Ideologies: author's values and beliefs
Objectivity: to be unbiased and stay non-partial
Times Have Changed!
Being a mom now I would never let my child do any of those things. Walking to school one mile from our house is only asking for trouble in many ways. Many child abduction cases have happened in areas close enough to my home to make me nervous for my little girl. For her to walk with a few of her friends to school in the morning I think would leave me going crazy wondering if she made it or not.
All a kid wants to do is play and explore new things and ideas. I let A.j., my daughter, go outside and play all the time don't get me wrong, but when I say its time to come in, she throws a fit, every time. The only place I would let her play with out an adult next to her side the entire time would be in our back yard, which just so you know is completely closed in with a brick fence and trees lining the perimeter and two dogs who bark at the drop of a leaf. However I can't go five minutes with out looking out the window or what not to make sure she is safe and still there. Now when I was young we would go on walks all around the neighborhood and go in the fields by our house. As long as we were back in time for dinner, we were free to roam. Ha yeah right, to bad the world is such a non trustworthy place to live now. My kids will not be going miles away from me with the idea of, " just as long as they're home for dinner".
The disease called "Perfection"
http://www.danoah.com/2010/09/disease-called-perfection.html
I feel that this disease of perfection is a big issue in Utah. There are a lot of social and religious pressures within our community. I especially like this quote from the blog:
Be bold about your weaknesses and you will change people's lives. Be honest about who you actually are, and others will begin to be their actual selves around you. Once you cure yourself of the disease, others will come to you, asking if they can just "talk". People are desperate to talk. Some of the most "perfect" people around you will tell you of some of the greatest struggles going on. Some of the most "perfect" people around you will break down in tears as they tell you how difficult life is for them. Turns out some of the most "perfect" people around us are human beings after all, and are dying to talk to another human being about it.
I hope you all can take a minute to read over this article. I know I am far from perfect and the people that seem to be perfect have problems just like the rest of us.
Both sides of General Education.
On the other hand, I do believe having basic math, english, and social skills are important in any job field. How could one ever get hired if they were always unprofessional at interviews or treated customers and patients with ignorance? So I do believe that general education is important and a student shouldn't be able to take only courses pertaining to their desired career. However, I think some classes are a stretch and unnecessary. Certain courses shouldn't be required to obtain a degree if it has absolutely nothing to do with your career choice, it is simply a waste of time.

Now days we are people who drive everywhere. It has almost became to convenient! Instead of walking to a store to purchase items, we have the mind set that we will just drive because it is quicker to get in the car and drive down the street. Although this is more convenient, I think this just adds to people getting lazier What ever happened to the days were people had time to walk to the store and get a little exercise?
Before we had all this terminological advances people had to do manuel labor. Farmed work all day outside to farm all their crops and grow food for their family. Now we are dependent on going to the grocery store and getting whatever it is that we need. The need that people used to have to garden and farm are over.
Will memories carry on?

Polluting, overweight people...
It seems as time goes on things are different, everyone is in a hurry and we don't have time to enjoy the small things. Driving more is something people are doing more everyday. I was talking with a friend she told me how she drives ten minutes out of her way to a cafe that has a drive through window, instead of going to the one that is two minutes away that doesn't have a drive through. She does this so she doesn't have to get out of her car and walk into the cafe. We as people need to be less lazy.
I'm not saying I am perfect, but when I have the opportunity to walk or ride my bike I do. These last few years I lived close enough to my work that I was able to ride my bike. I loved the exercise, I also thought maybe I was doing something to benefit the environment and help cut back on pollution. It's the little things we can do to help.
We are becoming lazy, overweight people. Some bring up the problem of not allowing their children to walk to school alone because there are "creeps." I say, lets fix this problem by walking our children to school so they're not alone and you don't have to worry about "creeps." More physical activity never hurt anyone. Kids are growing up not even knowing what it's like to walk somewhere. That is sad, we should all try something new to cut back on polluting our world, and try to get more physical activity.
Why general education?
I am currently studying to be a dental hygienist. I feel strongly agree that I do need general education classes. I feel that they have valid place in my education. I know that there are others who feel differently. That is one of the wonderful things about living in America...we get to have our different opinions.
I have personally worked in the dental field for almost twenty years. So why do I need to study general education and not just study the fine art of scrapping teeth? In my career so far I have had the chance to meet and work with a wide variety of people. Some highly educated, doctors and specialists and some that are not book educated but are life educated. This world has a vast range of people....I feel I have seen a few from both ends of the spectrum. I am amazed everyday the things that I learn from people I meet. I am in awe of some of the conversations that I have found myself in. So you may be asking how does all of this relate?
General education classes such as English, math and even communications will be things that we has hygienist pull from everyday. I can not imagine having to write a treatment plan to be presented to a highly educated person and not knowing the basics of good and proper English. We will meet and interact everyday with people who may need us to explain periodontal disease in terms that they can understand, teach up or down from where we are comfortable. General education gives us as hygienist and everyday citizens a broad base of knowledge to pull from.
So do I think I will use everything I learn in this English class, no, but the day will come that I will use some piece of knowledge gained here either in my career or in the world and I will be grateful I have the knowledge in my brain bank to pull from.
Generl education. Really needed?
I don't like that idea that we need to take general education classes. I think that most of them are just a waste of time and money. There are plenty of people that think the same thing. For example, biology as a per-requisite to micro biology. I think that it is a waste of time because most or everything that you learn in that class is something that you learned while you were in high school. May people will argue that you still need to take these classes so that you can apply them to your daily tasks in life. But I think that we have learned enough things in high school that we could use in life. The classes that you take in high school are sufficient enough that you shouldn't have to "retake" them later as a requirement for your degree. I think that it should be made optional for someone to take and if you think that you need in order to pass the next class then by all means you can take that if you want to. In my opinion by making general education classes optional then it would be a better experience for people that they will be able to get into their field a lot faster. I think that then they will take the classes that they will learn the most from and get the most out of. There are some fields that you know they will not use any of the classes that they had to take. like business pretty sure that you won't use biology where as you might use english and math and need to take those classes to get your degree. For dental hygiene I don't think that english should be a requirement to take unless you were planning on writing papers even then taking english 101 should be enough. I won't use it when I have my degree all I will be doing is cleaning peoples teeth. Some people may argue that you need it so that you can write a resume and such for a job. But with the internet that is not a hard thing to do.
There are some classes that are required that I think are a good thing to make students take for their degrees but those classes could be more angled to their field, For example. anatomy and physiology. they are good thing to learn so that we have a better understanding of the body because that is what we are going into is health care. Also math to a degree will help with the everyday world so that maybe we can be better at budgeting or even helping our children even more. General requirements would be good for someone also that didn't know what they wanted to go into and it would give them something to work towards if they want to get a degree
Are they really that necessary?
In reality, it seems that today’s society has become so dependent on something so lifeless. People seem to have a hard time even functioning if something happens to their car. Cars have become the most major part of our lives, taking over the more necessary or important ones. It seems that this yesterday’s luxury, has caused more problems than any real benefits. Yes, it is nice to be able to go for a random drive somewhere or road trip with your friends and family, or even make a quick run to the grocery store because you forgot the milk. But is it really that nice? Back then, people planned ahead of time. They made grocery lists, had budgets, even planned out home cooked meals in advance. There wasn’t such an issue with obesity or other health concerns that we see today. Family was more of a major focus and there was more togetherness back then, of which, we are lacking today. Heck, our environment might even stand a chance of being in better shape.
Then again, on the positive outlook, cars are a great thing to have to get you anywhere on a dime. Yes, gas may cost near a fortune today, but it’s still something that’s nice to have at your fingertips. Moving is simpler, going to work is less of a headache and running errands can be a blast! You don’t have to worry about bus schedules, standing in the cold waiting for a bus or other form of transportation, but keep in mind, this wasn’t that big of a deal back then. So really, is driving all that it’s cracked up to be? Just think about how much money you spend each month just to drive. First you have to buy the car, then pay to keep it running, pay for the gas so it can run, pay for the insurance, and on top of that, know how to avoid all the other idiots that don’t know how to drive! I have recently befriended a couple, who neither of them have the ability to drive, due to disabilities, but they also don’t let this factor affect their lives. Using public transportation or their own feet, they plan their lives accordingly to their needs or what has to be done.
So is there a right or a wrong side to driving? Yes, there is a positive and a negative side to this issue. I don’t think this argument will ever go one way or the other. I believe there are so many different sides to this story, and those sides all depend on how a person was raised and what they have grown accustom to. On my view of this matter, I think society as a whole needs to become less dependent on something else and more dependent on themselves.

The Second Happiest Day of My life
10/10/10--Freewrite
A Community of Cars
Kimberly Glenn
Can you imagine not having any cars? Can you imagine not having any other form of transportation than your own two feet? What about those people whom are wheel chair bound, or that can't walk? What would they do? Almost everything you hear today is about how the environment is being "killed" because of some of the technology today. Many statistics will show you that global warming is a problem that could be helped by driving less. Now, I don't know about you, but I do agree with these things...to a point. I do agree that there are problems in our world today that are caused by technology in some way. Take super markets for example, that Wal-Mart right down the road was probably not there twenty years ago. There was most likely a field, pasture, or home at that exact location. The store that would have been in the town in place of that Wal-Mart would have been a little family owned store, where most likely everyone knew everyone. Most people were friendlier in those times.
Now think about the evolution of cars. Almost everyone depends on a car whether it be to get to school, work, or for entertainment purposes. I, myself, have to drive about sixty miles per day just to get to school and back home. My husband drives about eighty miles per day, just to get to work and back. Between the both of us that is one hundred forty miles per day, seven hundred miles in a five day work week, which adds up to a whopping thirty-six thousand four hundred miles per year! It may sound like we are "those" people who don't seem to understand how the earth is being effected. But, trust me we do understand. We live in Tooele, UT, which is the closest place he could live to work on Dugway Proving Grounds (a military installation). I attend Fortis College, because it is the closest hygiene school to where we live.
As you can see from the paragraphs above cars are a basic need to many people in the United States as well as a variety of other countries. As the saying goes; things are going to get worse before they get better. This has definitely happened in the automobile industry. Companies are now trying to invent electric cars, and scientists are doing all that they can to come up with alternative fuel choices. Even if every day citizens don't think about "saving the planet" every second of their day, it does not mean that they are not concerned about all that has happend over time to our beautiful green earth. Many people just do not know simple alternatives that could make a huge difference.
I understand that there are numerous people that cannot choose to walk everywhere that they go. For example, when I was growing up I lived 32 miles from any town, and five miles from the closest neighbor. I have no idea how I would have walked that many miles just to get to school everyday. I would have practically had to leave the night before in order to get to school by 8am. But, maybe with the help of advertisment and coalition groups the public could be advised on simple alternatives to their lifestyles. Hopefully, most individuals would be willing to make a few changes to help out the environment until solutions to our addictions are made.
